Strong Foundations, Strong Future 2007 - WILDFIRE
Sharing stories about Indigenous child health
The WILDFIRE Matthew Campbell Memorial Evening (MCME) is held annually in memory of Matthew, a medical student who died tragically in a car accident in his second year, but who was passionate about and active in promoting Indigenous health. As such, the event runs not only to commemorate Matthew and his positive work, but also to inform and inspire Monash medical and allied-health students about Indigenous health issues. Students from a range of year levels and health-related courses at Monash are invited and encouraged to attend - the bigger the audience, the better!
This year's theme is "Strong Foundations, Strong Future: sharing stories about Indigenous child health". There will be 3 or 4 speakers on the night, including: a doctor, an Indigenous health professional, a Monash medical student who has a background in nutrition, and a pharmacy student, both of whom have undertaken placements in Indigenous communities. Speakers will share stories on their various experiences in, and opinions on, child health in remote Indigenous communities as well as in urban settings.
While the event is hosted by the Monash Clayton campus, it is both filmed and audio recorded in order to be able to redistribute to interested individuals and send to the other Monash campuses. This year, many of our other campuses are traveling to attend the night, while it is hoped that our Mildura Clinical School will receive a filmed copy of the night and host their own viewing night for all clinical students and interested individuals in Mildura.
