Wide Horizons Health Students Get Out of Town

Three health students share their experiences of rural and remote placement

Launched at NURHC 08, Wide Horizons Health Students Get Out of Town follows Josh Crase (medical student), Felix Ho (paramedic student) and Rachel Jenkins (nursing student) on rural placements in Mareeba, QLD and Katherine and Alice Springs, NT.  Josh, Felix & Rachel all grew up in city areas but have chosen to undertake rural placements as part of their studies.  It follows the highs and lows of their placements and includes social experiences ranging from bungee jumping to camel riding, and of course their clinical experiences.

The aim of the DVD is to promote the benefits of doing a rural or remote placement in the hope that all health students can see the advantages of going bush (even if only for a short time!)

You can view the documentary below or online by clicking here, or contact your RHC executive.
To receive a copy of the DVD please contact the NRHSN.

"I actually prefer the more rural hospitals because they're actually a bit of a flatter structure.  As a medical student in larger hospitals it's hard to feel like an extra set of hands...  But on all the country placements I've been on, you're a welcome member of the team right from the start."    Josh Crase, OUTLOOK
"When you're a rural nurse, you're a more kind of generalist.  So you're not just on a surgical ward, you need to know medical, surgical, paediatrics, a bit of midwifery... know a bit of everything.  I wanted to come really just to make an informed decision whether I wanted to do it (rural practice) or not."     Rachel Jenkins, SHARP
"It's definitely been rewarding, this rural placement, it's definitely improved my skills and improved my knowledge of the type of work rural paramedics do.  It's given me a good glimpse of a different life and different cultures."     Felix Ho, TEHC
