SHARP - Shining the light on Schizophrenia
Mental illness effects approximately 1 in every 5 people, including in rural and remote areas. Schizophrenia ranks among the top 10 causes of disability worldwide, with onset typically between the ages of 15 and 25, making it probably the biggest single cause of permanent disability starting in youth.
On May 21, SHARP held a special ‘Shining a Light on Schizophrenia’ awareness evening at the University of Wollongong in partnership with the Centre for Translational Neuroscience, Schizophrenia Research Institute, and local Respite and mental health services. A packed audience of over 250 medical and health students, university staff and community members attended the event and learned about what it is like to live with schizophrenia and where current research in Australia is heading.
The night provided attendees with a chance to chat with local respite and support services that are making a remarkable contribution to mental health in our area. A mobile lab and poster exhibition showcased current research by the University of Wollongong’s Centre for Translational Neuroscience. Fire dancers were also at the event, heating up the evening.
SHARP would like to thank everyone who came along in support of Schizophrenia Awareness Week, including the many SHARP members who volunteered on the night ushering and serving food. The night was a very successful community engagement event for our Rural Health Club and highlighted an important area with relevance to all health professionals.
