The National Rural Health Students' Network (NRHSN) represents 29 Rural Health Clubs (RHC) with over 9000 members located at universities throughout Australia. The NRHSN is a multidisciplinary Network.

NURHC Awards

Rural Health Workforce Australia are very proud to announce the following award winners, presented at NURHC '10.

Award for outstanding contribution to Indigenous Communities

Presented by Rural Health Workforce Australia & National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation

This award recognises a student's outstanding contribution to Indigenous Communities. Tessa Byrne a dentistry student from HOPE4HEALTH was awarded this $1000 prize.  Tessa has: 

  • Participated in the "Healthy Teeth" stationfor the HOPE4HEALTH Teddy Bear Hospital Outreach program in Cherbourg, Queensland.
  • Acquired enough toothbrushes and toothpaste as giveaways for all children attending the program.
  • In 2009, Tessa was involved in coordinating students to conduct a Dental Health Survey for the Barambah Regional Medical Service, an Aboriginal Medical Service, in Cherbourg.
  • Tessa has aided in the creation of student volunteer Cherbourg Emergency Dental trips.
  • Tessa has also arranged for a member of the Cherbourg community to undergo training as a dental assistant.

Award for outstanding contribution to a Rural Health Club

Presented by Rural Health Workforce Australia

This award recognises a student's outstanding dedication and leadership to a Rural Health Club. Stephanie Frazer, a physiotherapy student from MARHS was awarded this $1000 prize. Stephanie has:

  • Attended many Rural Health Club events
  • Helped organise many MARHS events and activities including the WARRIAHS visit to an anatomy lab, health careers expos, MARHS' participation in RAHMS Rural Appreciation Weekend
  • Was the Mental Helath and Personal Development Officer for MARHS in 2009
  • Organised 4 Mental Health First Aid courses, an eating disorder awareness workshop and activities for 2 Mental Health days
  • Is the 2010 MARHS President
  • As President, has worked to raise the profile of MARHS within thier University

Award for outstanding contribution to the promotion of rural health

Presented by Rural Health Workforce Australia

This award recognises a student's outstanding contribution to the promotion of rural health. Stephanie Jeremy, a Nursing student from CRANC was awarded this $1000 prize, for her:

  • Position as CRANC Treasurer in 2009
  • NRHSN's Senior Nursing Liaison Officer in 2010
  • Represented the NRHSN at the CRANA Plus Conference in 2009 and the RCNA Expo in 2010
  • At the CRANA Plus Conference attended a roundtable with the Hon Warren Snowdon MP, where Stephanie was able to raise issues relating to rural and remote placements
  • Stephanie has given lectures to promote the NRHSN and rural and remote health at the University of Canberra Monitor Online Newspaper

Award for outstanding contribution to a rural or remote community

Presented by Rural Health Workforce Australia

This award recognises a student's outstanding contribution to a rural or remote community. Teagan Ness, a Health Science (Indigenous Health) student, SHARP was awarded the $1000 prize for her:

  • In 2008-09 Teagan volunteered withinthe remote Indigenous community of Mutitjulu, in the health clinic and assisting in the primary school
  • Teagan also assisted in running recreation programs for the children over their school holidays with things such as sports programs and arts and craft
  • Teagan has also participated in the General Practice Network NT's RHSV Program in the Northern Territory 

Award for outstanding contribution to rural leadership

Presented by Rural Health Workforce Australia

This award recognises a student's outstanding contribution to rural leadership. Daniel Mahoney, a Physiotherapy student from WAALHIIBE was awarded this $1000 prize  for:

  • Daniel was WALHIIBE's Secretary in 2008, President in 2009 and Vice-President in 2010
  • During Daniel's involvemnet in the WAALHIIBE Executive, WAALHIIBE's membership has more than doubled and there is a far greater interest from University allied health coordinators who then encourage students to get involved
  • In 2009 Daniel presented at a WAALHIIBE event to Heads of allied health courses from the 5 Western Australian Universities WAALHIIBE is made up of
  • He secured $10,000 from a private regional hospital to go towards the future funding of a number of WAALHIIBE members for their rural clinical placements
  • Has organised a number of events
  • Currently the NRHSN's Co-Allied Health Senior Liaison Officer

Award for the Best NRHSN Rural Health Club Event

Presented by the National Rural Health Students' Network

This award recognises a great event that a Rural Health Club has run in 2009. The QLD Joint Rural Health Weekend run by RHINO, HOPE4HEALTH, BUSHFIRE & TROHPIQ won this $1000 award.

The trip was held in Beaudeser, Queensland and was an educational, experiential and social event that allowed Rural Health Club members to learn and network whilst in a rural setting. Students were given the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge by participating in workshops and discussions at the Beaudesert Hospital.  Students were able to undertake suturing, venepuncture, CPR, plastering, burr-holes and intubation skill sessions as well as hearing from experts in rural Indigenous health.  Students were also able to socialise and network with a range of people from different disciplines and health professions.

Janie Dade Smith Award

This award recognises students who have made a significant contribution to rural, remote or Indigenous health in some way. The award consists of 1st Prize: $300 & a book, 2nd Prize: $150 & a book and 3rd Prize: $50 and a book.

Cattleman's Cup - Video Competition

The Cattleman's Cup is  anew competition launched in 2010, seeking our Rural Health Club IT gurus to bring together a 2-3 minute video presentation.  OUTLOOK were awarded this $500 award and their video will uploaded on the NRHSN website shortly.

Life Membership

This award recognises graduates that have made an outstanding contribution to the NRHSN and/or their Rural Health Club and have gone on to further represent the NRHSN through their commitment to rural health.

Sally Grainger
Sally was the President of StARRH in 2008, taking over as President 6 months after it was first established.  Sally developed a very strong working relationship with NRHSN staff and executive to help strengthen the relationship between StARRH Charles Darwin University.  Sally was able to develop a strong membership base and organise events as well as participate in things like Indigenous Community Festivals and Rural High School Visits.  Sally was the NRHSN's Senior Nursing Liaison Officer and postponed her graduation date so that she could finish off this role and the responsibilities that she had undertaken with it.

Dr Aileen Underhill
Dr Aileen Underhill drove the establishment of James Cook University's Rural health Club RHINO in 2000.  Aileen was President of RHINO in 2000 and 2001 and organised a number of events including guest speaker evenings, a weekend trip to Charters Towers, Rural High School Visits, a Rural Retreat and RHINO's attendance at NURHC.
Aileen has continued her passion in her career as a Rural Registrar, currently working in outreach tropical paediatrics on Cape York, and still advocating for her collegaues as well as organising Rural Retreats as Registrar Liaison Officer for Tropical Medical Training.
