SHARP Close the Gap Day 2010 SHARP Close the Gap Day 2010
SHARP (Student Health Alliance for Rural Populations) members hit the ground running to hold 2 huge and exciting Close the Gap Day events this year – one at each of the University’s Wollongong and Shoalhaven Campuses.
Indigenous health was the focus of both events which aimed to increase awareness of the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians among the university and wider community. Through the events, we also wanted to share our enthusiasm for the positive impact we can all make to improve health outcomes for this important part of the Australian population.
The theme of this year’s Close the Gap Day was “Let’s get it right” and our Rural Health Club was excited to see so many people getting behind the events as we joined thousands of Australians on Thursday 25 March 2010 to show our commitment for the campaign.
Attendees jumped at the chance to hear from and meet our special guest speaker Gary Simon “Jagamarra”, collect some Close the Gap merchandise, find out more about the campaign, view a screening of the Oxfam DVD, and join us as we enjoyed a Close the Gap Day BBQ and some Close the Gap Day cake!
The events were a huge success, with over 300 people across both events adding their name to the Close the Gap pledge on the day. We generated lots of ideas on how we can all make a difference, and also attracted plenty of media attention!
