National Rural Health Student Network. The future of rural health.

Being a part of the NRHSN Executive Committee during 2017 has opened up doors and given us experiences we would never have ordinarily been given access to.

Being a part of the exec team opens many doors and provides the chance to connect with inspirational rural health leaders. It has also given me the opportunity to further grow my leadership skills working with the fantastic committee I have been lucky to Chair during 2017.

A few examples of events I attended this year include:

Stakeholder Roundtable Discussion chaired by the Dr David Gillespie MP, held in Canberra;

WONCA 2017 where I presented the NRHSN paper on Rural Placements Survey; and

Federal Budget Lock In: this is the first time the NRHSN was invited to attend and I was honoured to represent the NRHSN and network with important stakeholders.

I'd encourage health students with a passion for rural health to apply for the 2018 NRHSN Executive Committee.

It has been great to be able to have a truly meaningful input into the future of rural health in Australia through research, representation and advocacy.

I have enjoyed being able to work at the national level to action change and via working as a team with the rest of the exec, being able to guide and motivate rural health clubs in the fantastic work they do.

Examples of events I was involved in this year include:

WONCA 2017, where I presented on the topics of Leadership (on behalf of NRHSN) and Peer Support in a Rural Setting (on behalf of UTas); and

WONCA Council Meeting - great opportunity to meet similar people similar and share ideas.

I strongly encourage anyone with an interest in rural health to apply for a position on the 2018 NRHSN team.

It has been a really enjoyable opportunity to connect with likeminded students and key stakeholders to promote the future of rural health.

Being a part of the NRHSN Executive Committee has allowed me to further build on my communication and leadership skills.

Event highlights have been:

NRHA and WONCA Conferences 2017; and

Working on the Climate Change position paper with the elected working group. I will be presenting this paper at the upcoming RMA17 in Melbourne.

  • I highly recommend you apply to join the 2018 Committee to work with me to keep building on the success of the NRHSN and its Rural Health Clubs.
