Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service Kununurra Western Australia

As part of my General Practice placement, I was lucky enough to undertake a self-organized four week rural placement at the Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service (OVAHS) in Kununurra, WA. Kununurra is a small rural town in the East Kimberly between Broome and Darwin. My placement took place during the dry season with temperatures hovering around 37 degrees Celsius daily, however, locals considered this temperature fairly cool.

During my placement, I was fortunate to engage in parallel consulting and gained invaluable hands-on patient experience.  OVAHS not only provides health care to the immediate Kununurra community but also to more rural locations, including communities within the Northern Territory. These excursions to assess the health of those living traditionally on the land and at various cattle stations across the Kimberly was my favourite aspect of the placement.

My time spent working with OVAHS and exploring Kununurra and the East Kimberly was an absolutely amazing experience with memories that will stay with me for a lifetime.
