I am currently in my fourth year as a dental student at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Orange, NSW. Growing up in Melbourne, I was not too familiar with rural health. Over the past 4 years in Orange, however, I have come to realise that the availability of health services in rural locations is vastly disproportionate to the needs of rural citizens, in comparison to metropolitan cities. I have seen patients travel hours to Orange to access basic dental and other health services, and even longer distances for specialist services that are only available in Sydney. Witnessing this inequality sparked a passion for rural health and has driven me to join my university’s rural health club. I have been a Treasurer for the Rural Health Positive (Rh+) initiative, which is a cross-campus rural health club at CSU, for 2019 and 2020. In this role, I have helped to set up the club as a founding executive committee member, managed and recorded of all club finances, assisted in development of the annual club budget, and directly liaised with members of the Rh+ club and committee as well as representatives from Three Rivers University Department of Rural Health. Most recently I have helped to organise an online event for the RunSweatInspire Festival for NAIDOC week run by the Indigenous Marathon Foundation. I am confident that I will be able to fulfil the position of vice chair with the skills and attitude I have developed as a part of the Rh+ executive committee, but most importantly because of my passion for rural health.

1 and 2. Access to email, phone and internet for communication throughout the term. Availability for travel to attend RHC, stakeholder and NRHSN events and meetings throughout the term. • I have access to email, phone and internet. I am also available to attend all NRHSN related events throughout the term as long, as long as my university schedule is permitting.

3 and 7. Previous experience within the NRHSN at national and/or RHC level. Demonstrated previous Committee secretariat roles/experience. • I have been Treasurer for my local RHC (Rh+) for 2019 and 2020 which is an executive committee role.

4. Interest and involvement in rural health. • Since I started university in Orange, I have become passionate about rural health. I have been a member of my local RHC for the past 2 years and have also participated as an Indigenous mentor at the local high school. I also am attending university in a rural location and undertake various rural placements throughout my years at university to further my understanding of, and contribution to, rural health.

5,6 and 15. Demonstrated previous leadership and leadership support roles/experience/learnings. Demonstrated previous experience/ability to work cohesively in a team. • I have had a role as an executive member of my local RHC for 2 years. I have also had a leadership role as a shift supervisor in the past for 2 years. Through these roles I have gained experience and learned about leadership. I have led and organised club events and meetings as well as created timelines and team rosters for staff members. • Prior to my role as a shift supervisor, I was a regular member of the staff for 3 years, during which I helped support the managers. I observed the managers and learned how they handled situations and implemented ideas in ways which are most beneficial to both team members and customers. I then applied these techniques during my leadership roles. • My role as a member of my local RHC as well as my role as shift supervisor has required me to work closely and cohesively as a team member.

8. Demonstrated previous experience in presenting at conferences, meeting with stakeholders and media interviews. • I have previously met with stakeholders such as senior high school staff members as well as representatives from Three Rivers University Department of Rural Health to gain approval and organise Rh+ events. • I have not personally presented at conferences or done media interviews however I am passionate about the role of vice chair and am a quick learner. I am confident that I will be able to work together with other committee members to learn the required skills to present at conferences and conduct media interviews.

9. Demonstrated understanding of the role of the Executive Committee within the NRHSN. • I have read through the executive committee 2021 document on the NRHSN website. While Rh+ is a smaller club, the executive structure is similar to that of NRHSN and thus I am familiar with the structure of the executive committee as well as the responsibilities of each member.

10. Demonstrated previous understanding or commitment of a multi-disciplinary approach to rural and remote health. • I understand that rural and remote health requires a multi-disciplinary approach involving Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Paramedicine, Pharmacy, and other allied health services. I understand the importance of this, as I am a dental student and we work closely with many other health disciplines, especially doctors and pharmacists. • Rh+ also closely works with the Three Rivers University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) which is a is a key initiative in the Commonwealth Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program. Three Rivers UDRH and Rh+ work together to offer rural training and experiences for multiple health disciplines, engage with the local community to promote a multi-disciplinary approach and offer scholarships for students enrolled in medicine, dentistry, nursing and other allied health courses. • I have also read through the Multidisciplinary Rural Training Pathway resource on the NRHSN website.

11. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of NRHSN publications, resources and position/priority papers. • I have researched the Advocacy section on the NRHSN website and have read the latest publication and papers including the Positive Rural Placement Experiences for Allied Health Students Position Paper and the Mental Health Position Paper. I have also looked at the resources offered by the NRHSN including the Newsletters and Engagement Guides.

12. Demonstrated previous experience in representing a representative body’s views and not personal views. • As a member of the Executive committee of my local RHC, I have been directly involved in representing the Rh+ members’ views and raising these views with higher ups as required.

13. Demonstrated previous experience in ensuring timelines for tasks are met for self and others. • Working as a committee member for Rh+ for 2 years, I have had to help create and meet a number of timelines whether these be for the annual budgets or for club events. I have also had to ensure that other committee members are meeting required timelines and all club activities are running smoothly.

Demonstrated ability to work in close collaboration with the Consortium of RWAs and/or an administrator. • As the treasurer of Rh+, I have spent the past 2 closely worked together with the Student Liaison Officer from CSU as well as the Liaison officer from Three Rivers UDRH. I have also worked closely with administrators during my time as an Indigenous student mentor. • Due to regular meeting with administrators as well as my role as shift supervisor, I am confident in my abilities to communicate and behave in a professional manner.

Employment History:

Treasurer Rural Health Positive (Rh+) club at Charles Sturt University 2019 – Present • Rural Health Positive (Rh+) is a cross-campus rural health club at Charles Sturt University. • Helped to set up the club as a founding executive committee member in 2019 and continued in this role as treasurer in 2020. • Role includes managing and recording of all club finances as well as development of the annual club budget. • This position involves direct liaising with members of the RH+ club and committee as well as representatives from the Three Rivers University Department of Rural Health. • Helped organise the 2020 NAIDOC week RunSweatInspire Festival for students at CSU. Met with the club executives and the Student Liaison Officer to decide on subsidies for Rh+ members, promoting the club and event on social media, and putting through the transaction for the event as the treasurer. • Rh+ has done a number of local high school visits and Indigenous cultural events over the past 2 years. As a member of the executive committee, this involved helping reach out to local schools, being involved in career mentoring for high school students, and helping organise virtual videos for students.

Shift Supervisor Pizza Hut, Mt Waverley June 2016 – August 2018 • Managed operation of a store in accordance with company safety policies and accredited health regulations and training new staff in compliance. • Coordinated regular meetings with team members to integrate their ideas to ensure seamless delivery of services.

Volunteering Experience: Indigenous Academic Mentor Kinross Wolaroi School June 2017 – October 2018 • Role involved one-on-one mentoring with a year 7/8 Indigenous student from the local high school. • Attended weekly meeting at the high school to assist the student with school and homework across all subjects, as well as communicating via email for any problems through the week. • Acted as a mentor and gave the student general tips and advice regarding any issues they had with schooling or career aspirations.
